The way mother of pearl inlaid picture was made: The wooden backboard is lacquered eighteen times, and allowed to dry each time before the Mother of Pearl is inlaid. Mother of Pearl is cut out before it can be inlaid into the work. The Mother of Pearl is hand-sawn. The pattern is first stencilled onto the Mother of Pearl, before being sawn with an especially fine hack. Cut-outs in the board are made to the exact shape of the Mother of Pearl that will fit into it. Then finally, the lacquer picture is finely engraved. This work is very intricate, in every detail. It takes 2 months to produce it.
